The day you take home your diamond jewellery it’s hard to stop looking at it. The way it sparkles and catches the light is mesmerising. Overtime and through use however, jewellery will naturally be exposed to dirt, oils, beauty products, household cleaners and more. So what can you do to maintain that day one sparkle? In this guide we share what to avoid, how to store your precious items and the best way to clean your jewellery at home.

Preventing damage to your jewellery

Of course the best way to care for your jewellery is to avoid damaging it in the first place. Knowing what to steer clear of can keep your diamonds looking their very best, and will increase the longevity of your jewellery.

Avoid contact with beauty products - Try to remove your jewellery when applying hand creams, lotions, potions, hairspray and perfumes. Simply getting into the habit of applying your jewellery after you get ready will help with this.

Remove jewellery when undertaking heavier work - This includes gardening, DIY and cleaning. Even the highest quality jewellery is not immune to dinks and scratches when we go about our more physical chores. Contact with cleaning detergents and chemicals can cause tarnishing and corrosion. Of course, wearing glove is another option if you prefer not to be taking your jewellery on and off, and this will make sure nothing comes loose in the process.

Do not submerge jewellery in water for long periods of time - none of us would do this on purpose, but unknowingly whilst bathing, swimming, washing up or cleaning, our jewellery could spend more time underwater than is recommended. The effect is that items will eventually lose their sparkle and tarnish. If you are a regular swim regularly, be sure to remove your jewellery as chlorine will damage your jewellery.

How to store your jewellery

A safe, soft environment - When you are not wearing your jewellery, a good quality, fabric lined jewellery box is idea. To avoid pieces getting tangled and scratched, keep items separate and chains fastened.

Out of direct sunlight - Find a shaded or darker space for your jewellery as direct sunlight can cause damage to metals and discolouration.

Somewhere dry - Leaving jewellery in damp and wet environments such as bathrooms can tarnish and corrode metal and precious stones.
